If you search online for overhead glazing solutions, you’ve likely encountered the words ‘roof lanterns’ and ‘roof lights’ a few times. You may have also seen them referred to as ‘sky lights,’ ‘roof windows,’ or various other names, but what exactly are they and is there a difference?

Roof lanterns and roof lights are two separate products. Those two names tend to get mixed up easily, but in a nutshell:

A roof lantern is a three-dimensional structure that projects upwards from a flat roof and captures sunlight from multiple angles throughout the day, whereas a roof light more closely resembles a regular window, but it’s placed in the roof rather than a wall. If it looks like a big triangular structure, it’s a lantern but it looks like a window that’s in the ceiling, it’s a roof light.

At AA Window Services Installations Ltd, we tend to favour roof lights because they’re more versatile. By their very nature, lanterns can only be placed on flat roofs whereas roof lights can be fixed in sloping roofs and flat roofs alike, and still bring in an abundance of natural light. That being said, lanterns are a great choice too, especially when fitted on orangeries or extensions.
